STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania - Former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was arrested and jailed on Wednesday after being hit with 12 new child sex abuse charges.

A judge ordered Sandusky - already facing 40 other similar charges - be jailed unless he pays $250,000 bail. If he does post bail, Sandusky must wear an electronic monitoring device, based on the new charges.

Two new accusers, bringing the total to 10 men who claim Sandusky molested them as children, said they were abused in his home, on campus and in other locations including a hotel pool and a car.

Sandusky has denied any sexual misconduct, saying he showered with boys but never abused them. Sandusky had been free on $100,000 unsecured bail granted last month by a local judge.

Because Sandusky was unable to immediately post bail on the new charges, he was taken to jail after a hearing. Prosecutors had sought $1 million in bail.

Authorities arrested and arraigned Sandusky on the new charges after a grand jury questioned the new accusers, both linked to The Second Mile, a charity started by Sandusky in 1977.

Sandusky faces a hearing next Tuesday on the earlier charges stemming from an investigation into the first eight alleged victims, who recounted incidents that took place over a 15-year span. One of the new accusers - who are known as Victims 9 and 10 to prosecutors - says he was assaulted in 1997 while the other claims the abuse took place in 2004.

Sandusky's latest charges include four counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and two counts of unlawful contact with a minor, first-degree felonies. Each is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and $25,000 fines.

He also faces one new count of indecent assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of children, all third-degree felonies that are each punishable by up to seven years in prison and $15,000 fines.

Sandusky, 67, was also charged on Wednesday with one count of indecent assault and two counts of corruption of minors, misdemeanors each punishable by up to five years in prison and $10,000 fines.

"As in many of the other cases identified to date, the contact with Sandusky allegedly fit a pattern of 'grooming' victims - beginning with outings to football games and gifts, they later included physical contact that escalated to sexual assaults," Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly said.
