Fate is never fair

Sometimes, you are caught in a current much stronger than you, a devastating flow, unstoppable.

Charlotte and Emilie Meaud, twin sisters, were killed at the terrace of the Carillon, during the attacks on Paris, on the 13th of November.

They were only 30 years old, their whole life ahead of them.

Before their dreadful ends, they radiated their youthful energy, spreading their good humour everywhere.

Their gentle gaze has gone forever.

Just a few streets further, Laura Croix, 31 years old, was severely injured at the Bataclan palace.

Three bullets in the chest, as much in the abdomen, a bullet lodged between a lung and the heart, two fingers of the left hand cut off, Laura rises slowly from the ashes.

These innocent women were among the victims of a terrible slaughter that claimed the lives of 130 people and injured 350 others.

“Man is the cruelest animal” said Friedrich Nietzsche once.

The world is sometimes a terrible place, pitiless, dark as a bad dream.

Fate knocks at the door randomly

Why were the unfortunate Charlotte and Emilie Meaud seated at that terrace at that precise moment?

Why did bad luck fall upon them and not others?

As they did once in while, this night the twin sisters were happy of being together to exchange news and to indulge in small-talk under the sun.

We still hear softly, as from a distance, the magic strains of their crooning voice.

Nothing in particular, a moment of fraternal family life as it comes.

On the stroke of ten o'clock in the evening, death took them by surprise.

Under the tables, the face saturated with fresh blood, their inanimate bodies.

The very same day, thousands of people crossed the way of the terrorists.

In the bars where they machine-gunned Charlotte and Emilie, a half hour before, 80 persons - who were present down there talking it over a coffee or a beer, were innocently enjoying life .

Beyond the security measures failures, if this very day the traffic had flowed smoothly if the attack had taken place earlier, the faces of the victims would have been different.

Or even, if an accident had occurred on the terrorist’s route to the attack area, other people would have died on the terrace of the Carillon.

Other faces, others tears.

Was it written in the palms of Charlotte and Emilie Meaud that they would die this very day?
