Exploring lacquer art: Luxury from the East
Traditional Chinese lacquer art is one of the popular China-chic wave that’s blowing the minds of young people. What is lacquer art? How are such exquisite pieces of art created? Chinese youths are curious, so are foreign friends. China Daily invited Xenia, a designer from the Netherlands, to delve into the world of lacquer art from professor Pu Meihe of the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in Wuhan, Hubei province. There, Xenia is introduced to the process of making lacquer art and learned why the colors black and red are commonly used in the craft. The pair also embarked on a journey that transcends more than 8,000 years in the history of lacquer ware at Muyantang Museum. While making her very own lacquer fan, Xenia also learned about the innovative steps taken to bring lacquer back into the lives of young people today. Want to know more? Watch the video to find out.
