Shanghai Grand Theatre ready to usher in 2020
Shanghai Grand Theatre will celebrate New Year's Day with a series of concerts and a pop-up market featuring Chinese culture and customs.
The first to be held is the New Year's Concert by the Shanghai Opera House orchestra, conducted by maestro Fabio Luisi from Italy. This is the first time Luisi is collaborating with the orchestra, and two concerts will take place on Dec 30 and 31.
The program for the first night was handpicked by Luisi and consists of works by Rossini, Mozart and Brahms.
On New Year's Eve, the concert will feature Beethoven's Symphony No.9, the traditional piece for the New Year celebration at Shanghai Grand Theatre.
A second concert by the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra will take place in the evening and last till midnight when audiences in the theater can hear the grand bell tower on the Bund ring in the New Year. The Chinese repertoire for this concert will be conducted by maestro Ye Cong.
On the evening of New Year's Eve, the Shanghai Grand Theatre will also perform in the lobby and host a pop-up market place in the Shanghai Grand Theatre.
"People will have an immersive experience of art and celebration," said Zhang Xiaoding, general manager of SGT.
