Myanmar's union parliament resets March 10 for presidential run

(Xinhua) Updated: 2016-03-01 14:20

NAY PYI TAW - Myanmar's union parliament Tuesday reset March 10 instead of March 17 for presidential run, for which three groups of the union parliament representatives are to nominate their respective candidates.

Of the last three candidates nominated respectively from the group of elected House of Representatives (Lower House), the group of elected House of Nationalities (Upper House) and the group from military-nominated representatives, the one who wins the most number of votes will take the presidential seat, while the other two be vice-presidents.

The nomination list will be forwarded to the speaker of the union parliament.

The presidential election will be followed by the formation of new government and power transfer to new head of state will be on March 31 when the current government term expires.

The newly-elected union parliament made up of House of Representatives and House of Nationalities (Upper House) started its first session in Nay Pyi Taw on Feb 8 after the previous term of the parliament expires.

Myanmar held a general election to elect parliament representatives in Nov 8, 2015, in which the National League for Democracy (NLD) won the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats, which is strong enough for it to form a new government independently under the constitution and nominate the president and two vice presidents.

The first union parliament session is chaired by U Mann Win Khaing Than of the NLD who is also Speaker of the House of Nationalities.
