S. Korean president mulls visiting Iran after sanctions lifted

(Xinhua) Updated: 2016-01-27 11:03

SEOUL - South Korean President Park Geun-hye was considering her visit to Iran as economic sanctions were lifted after an agreement between Tehran and world powers, Park's office said Wednesday.

Presidential spokesman Jeong Yeon-guk told reporters that he was aware of Park mulling her visit to Iran.

Jeong declined to comment on details, adding that the timing and other itineraries would be announced when fixed.

If her visit is fixed, Park would be the first South Korean leader visiting the Persian nation as president.

Park's push for her travel to Tehran reportedly began to be considered after Iran agreed with world powers in July last year to limit its nuclear capabilities in return for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Most of the sanctions have been dropped, or in the process of being lifted, encouraging global companies to go to the oil-rich nation of nearly 80 million people for business deals.

During her visit, Park is forecast to hold the first summit meeting with her Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani to discuss the bilateral economic cooperation and South Korean companies' entrance into the Persian state.
