Flights disrupted after plane crash lands in Kenya airport

Xinhua | Updated: 2015-01-04 21:32

NAIROBI - Kenya Airways said Sunday all flights landing into the country's capital Nairobi were disrupted after a plane crash landed and blocked runway at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Kenya Airways CEO Mbuvi Ngunze said in a statement the disruption on the JKIA runway is still ongoing, adding that the aircraft is not operated by Kenya Airways.

"All flights landing into Nairobi are diverted to Mombasa while those due to leave JKIA are still suspended. Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and Ministry of Transport investigators are on site," Ngunze said.

He said the Kenya Airways has provided security and safety equipment and is awaiting KCAA update on runaway clearance expected in the next two hours.

"Kenya Airways expects disruption of all flights today, and will advise on all flight status as soon as the runway opens," Ngunze said.

Ngunze did not elaborate on the plane and casualties of the accident.
