Egypt to try Morsi over leaking security papers to Qatar

Xinhua | Updated: 2014-09-06 20:01

CAIRO - Egypt's ousted president Mohamed Morsi along with 10 others will face trial over leaking security documents to Qatar, state-run MENA news agency reported on Saturday.

The former president is facing charges of handing national security files to the Qatari intelligence and Doha-based Al- Jazeera news channel under orders from the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Relations between Qatar and Egypt have been tense since mid- 2013, when Morsi was toppled by the army after massive protests against his rule.

Qatar is a key ally of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, which was designated as a terrorist organization by the Egyptian government in December.

Morsi is now being tried in three other cases for inciting deadly violence against protesters, conspiring with foreign organizations and involvement in a mass prison escape during 2011 revolt that toppled Hosny Mubarak.
