Fruit and vegetable carver Clive Cooper is famous for his smashing pumpkin-carving. Now he's using melons. The sculptor has turned his razor sharp knives and clay sculpting tools to carving watermelons. Vancouver based, Cooper turns his unique skill to creating colourful characters, as opposed to traditional buffet table pretty designs.

Clive incredibly transform the three layered fruit - skilfully manipulating the outer green skin, the white pith layer, and the pink/red flesh - into a fearsome collection of angry alligators, Norse Vikings, Samurai Warriors and so on.

England born Clive came to Canada as a six year-old and has always been a big fan of comics and sci-fi movies. He started by carving a pumpkin for a work contest and received so much attention for his initial efforts. It inspired him to continue.

Clive is careful in selecting the right watermelons that are firm and have a suitable shape for the carving he has in mind. He also sometimes uses more than one watermelon in a single creation - adding on eerie ears, horny hats and terrifying teeth.

Does the family eat the watermelons afterwards? They have juiced a few in the past, but generally Clive want to keep his creations.
