VLADIVOSTOK - Ten people were killed as an An-28 aircraft crashed in the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East region on Wednesday, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Rescuers initially found nine bodies on the site of the accident. Four people were injured and one was missing, said a spokeswoman with the Far Eastern branch of the country's Emergency Situations Ministry.

However, according to latest reports, a child among the four injured died of injuries, thus putting the death toll at 10.

The plane lost contact with air control at 12:28 local time (0128 GMT). A rescue team onboard an Mi-8 helicopter found the wreckage some 10 km away from the Palana village.

A local transportation official said an investigation is already under way.
