"I spoke to the (Indian) Ambassador there. The Ambassador told me that all the 25,000 Indians in Japan, most of them are in and around Tokyo... they are all safe and he is in touch with the Indian community," Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said.

The minister said that the Indian Embassy in Japan would do whatever is possible to help the Indians and a helpline has already been set up for those who need assistance.

"Whatever assistance that India is capable of and which would help the people of Japan in the hour of crisis, it would be done," said the minister.

India has already sent a plane-load of blankets to Japan.
