DHAKA - Five people were killed and 10 others injured in a head-on-collision between two buses Thursday morning at Bangladesh's Bhogirathpur in Sadar sub-district of Narsingdi district, 51 km northeast of capital Dhaka.

Police was quoted by private news agency UNB as saying that a Narisngdi bound bus collided head on with another Dhaka bound luxury bus coming from opposite direction, leaving five people killed on the spot at about 8 am local time.

At least 10 people, including a bus driver, were also injured in the fatal accident.

All the victims were the passengers of the Narisngdi bound bus. The bus was also badly damaged in the accident.

Road accident is a common phenomenon in Bangladesh due to violation of traffic rules by inept drivers and lack of monitoring of the traffic department. According to the statistics of the Police Headquarters, as many as 2,958 people were killed in 3,381 road accidents across the country in 2009.
