China beaten 1-0 by DPR Korea to miss four-nation trophy

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea on Sunday shattered China's dream of winning the four-nation men's soccer tournament which doubles up as an Olympic test run.

With a 1-0 victory, the DPR Korean Olympic team, which has been drawn into the "Group of Death" at the 12-strong competitions of Asian Zone Olympic qualifications, still sits at the bottom with only one win from three games

Botswana tops the four-nation table following a 1-0 win over Japan.

Ratomir Djukovic's team committed errors in all lines and failed to make a serious attack until 13 minutes into the match when Jiang Ning wasted China's best chance before the break, shooting wide after beating the DPR Korean keeper Ri Myong Guk and facing an empty goalmouth.

The hosts, with a weak defence on the offensive 3-5-2 formation, finally paid for the price in the 60 minute when Cha Jong Hyok, a regular starting defender and skipper of the visiting side, turned an imperfect chance into scoring with a header.

Pak Nam Chol hardly made it 2-0 a quarter later after receiving a fine cross set by second half substitute Kim kyong Il, but his volley hit on a Chinese defender and was bounced out.

DPR Korea, however, suffered some harsh time as its top striker An Chol Hyok carried out its first scoring opportunity in as early as the seventh minute but his strike was denied by the far post.

Again on 16 minutes, DPR Korea should have taken the upper hand when An, who scored a hat-trick out of seven goals the team scored in the preliminary matches of Asian Zone Olympic qualifications, headed in a nice effort from his teammates in front of the goalmouth, but the referees, all from China, blew it off citing an offside.

It wasn't the only occasion that the DPR Koreans were misjudged, as they were mistakenly ruled offside at the 12th and 25th minute.

Catcalls from the stand could be heard frequently at the apparently unfair judges from the Chinese referees throughout the match, as the enthusiastic crowd also booed at the error-studded Chinese team.

But the spectators gave ungrudging applause when Jong Su Hyok from the visiting team made the superb shots from 35 meters in front of the goalmouth, twice shooting wide on 25 and 26 minutes though.
