Comment on "Demographic challenges" (China Daily, Oct 23)

Western analysts have been saying that China's economic growth is only because of its "demographic bonus" or huge supply of cheap labor. This analysis lacks reason.

China became the favorite destination of manufacturing industries not only because of its large pool of low-cost labor, but also because of its infrastructure such as high-quality logistics, modern communications network and uninterrupted electricity supply, and its enthusiastic entrepreneurs.

The energetic and hardworking people of Zhejiang province, for example, are known for building rows of factories in quite a short time.

Foreign manufacturers who set up shop in China have been satisfied with its efficient and well-maintained roads and ports.

But to maintain China's competitive edge, the government should think about what else, apart from labor, can drive its economic growth in the future.

In fact, the government should focus on the quality of education if it wants to enjoy continuous economic growth.

It should try to increase the average education level of Chinese people, make senior middle school education free and ensure students do not drop out of school because of poverty.

Also, it should help excellent students, especially those from rural areas, get a chance to receive higher education.
