A provincial brush calligraphy final was held in Kunming, Yunnan province on Oct 7 with over 60 teenage calligraphers competing.

The contest aims to promote quality-oriented youth education and focus society’s attention on adolescent cultural education.

The competition was launched on July 1, attracting over 1,000 teenagers. Only 60 of their calligraphic works made it through to the final. Some wrote in regular script, others used the seal characters, a commonly used language during the Qin state (771-221 BC) or the official script, an ancient style of calligraphy current in the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220).

“More brush calligraphy competitions will be held later to promote the development of the art and the prosperity of Chinese traditional culture”, said Liu Kunsheng, a judge of the contest and professor of China Calligraphy & Painting International University.
