Dairy giant Fonterra said tests have discovered Clostridium botulinum in its whey protein, a product its clients use as raw material to produce baby formula and sports drinks. Three batches of Karicare milk powder and 12 batches of Dumex milk powder are involved.

The milk powders have been pulled off shelves in most supermarkets in Zhangjiagang of Jiangsu province, according to local media on August 5.

A manager in RT-Mart said the store has pulled all Dumex milk powder products off the shelves on August 4 and will accept all returns on involved milk powder. For those uninvolved, they will also accept returns as long as the products are unopened.

An official from the Zhangjiagang administration for industry and commerce said they have not been instructed to check involved milk powders. They will take action immediately after being informed.

According to a warning from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, people should not use milk powder from the involved brands and batches.

These products can still be found in online shops, but shopkeepers noted that their milk powder is safe.

A young mom surnamed Chen said her baby drinks milk from Karicare milk powder, and she checked the batch as soon as she saw the news. She bought the milk powder on a reliable website and felt relieved to discover the product was safe.
