Changsha city in Hunan province has carried out a series of measures this year to combat its atmospheric pollution and as of Nov 30, the city’s fine weather days have reached 210 in 2014, 16 days more compared with the same period last year, Changsha Evening News reported on Dec 8.

Changsha Party Chief Yi Lianhong has repeatedly stressed during his investigations into the city’s environmental protection work that environmental protection is significant for people’s livelihoods and departments at all levels in the city should strengthen efforts to deal with the problem of air pollution.

The city has made up a set of air pollution control plans this year, covering 138 projects under nine categories such as pollution management in major industries, closing outdated production capacity, and greening and ecology construction. The total investments for the projects will be close to 7.76 billion yuan ($1.26 billion), and 75 of them, scheduled for this year, have all already been carried out under the plan.

According to statistics from Hunan’s Environmental Monitoring Center, the main pollution sources affecting the air quality of Changsha, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan include motor vehicle emissions, industrial source, dust, smoke and coal dust, and catering oil smoke.

The department believes that motor vehicle emissions contribute the most to the density of PM2.5, followed by industrial sources, dust, smoke and coal dust, catering oil smoke, biomass burning, and others.

Changsha seeks to revive porcelain production

In recent years, the local government has sought to revive the region's long tradition in porcelain making and boost local industry with the cultural influence of ancient Tongguan kilns, which have a history of 1,200 years.
