In the late 19th century, a farmer in neighboring Hebei province had a son when he was 40, an advanced age to be a parent in that era. To ensure the kid would grow up healthy, he gave him the nickname "Doggy". According to rural Chinese custom, a child with genteel attributes would find more difficulty surviving its early years. Hence, the deliberately lowly name.
