Baby returned to parents after being trafficked

Xinhua | Updated: 2013-08-05 15:37

XI'AN - A newborn baby who was allegedly sold to human traffickers by an obstetrician in Northwest China's Shaanxi province was returned to his parents on Monday, local police said.

Yang Jianlong, a policeman from Fuping county where the alleged trafficking took place about 20 days ago, handed over the baby to Lai Guofeng and his wife at the county's maternal and child health care hospital.

Yang said DNA tests confirmed the baby is Lai's son.

The baby was allegedly sold for 21,600 yuan ($3,494) by an obstetrician surnamed Zhang in the morning of July 17, one day after he was born in Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, according to the county government.

Zhang and five other suspects involved in the case have been detained on suspicion of human trafficking.

The baby was found in a township in Anyang city of neighboring Henan province at around 3 am Sunday and was in good condition.

The hospital's head Wang Li and her two deputies were sacked on Sunday over the case.

Local police said they are investigating five other similar cases which allegedly occurred in the same hospital.
