Innovation key to new US-China relations

The establishment of a more cooperative approach to Sino-US relations will require innovation of various sorts, including a re-assessment of policy issues and foreign relations theory, according to the annual Blue Book of the United States, published on Monday.

The annual report from the China Academy of Social Sciences addressed the need for both the United States and China to accumulate practical experience in building a new type of cooperative major-power relationship, based on the existing theory of international relations.

The two countries need to continue to expand common areas of interest and develop mutual respect based on understanding each other's core interests and major concerns, said the report.

The Asia-Pacific region should be seen as a platform for cooperation, in which consultation and communications should be improved, and mechanisms for crisis management and damage control should be established.

Experts said in the report that China and the US should not allow crises to affect their overall relationship, since a positive bilateral relationship between the two major powers is an agreed goal for the future.

However, attaining such a goal will depend on the gradual accumulation of positive energy over time, the report said.
