6.6-magnitude quake hits NW China

Welcome to our live rolling coverage of the 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Northwest China's Gansu province at 07:45 am on Monday. The epicenter hit the borders between Minxian and Zhangxian counties –  two areas still recovering from weeks of torrential rain and flooding. Here we will bring you the latest news as it happens.

The death toll has climbed to 89, with 5 others still unaccounted for, in an earthquake that hit Northwest China's Gansu province Monday morning, local authorities said.

As of 9 pm, the death toll has climed to 87, with five missing and 593 injured, according to the publicity office of the quake-hit Dingxi city in Gansu province.

Road conditions of National Highway 212 and Provincial Highway 306, both of which run through the quake-hit Dingxi city, have been restored to normal after landslide cleanup efforts, according to Ministry of Transport.

Communication network conditions have remained stable for most of the time since the morning quake, according to Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The death toll has climbed to 75. Minxian reported the bulk of the casualties, with 72 deaths, 14 missing and and 584 injured, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The death toll of the quake has risen to 54, according to Dixing city's release on Sina Weibo.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang both gave calls to quake areas to express their concerns and give instructions to the earthquake relief.

Some 500 tents and 2,000 quilts have been sent to the worst affected areas. The Red Cross Society of China has also dispatched a team of disaster relief workers, with 200 tents, 1,000 family emergency kits and 2,000 cotton-padded jackets.
