Eight people involved in the first organized human organ trafficking case in Guangdong province were sentenced on Monday in the Second Detention House of Dongguan, Guangdong.

The group includes a surgeon, an anesthetist, a financial backer and people who acted as agents, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The surgeon, surnamed Zhou, received 20,000 yuan ($3,210) for every surgery. He was sentenced to 10 years in jail, deprived of his political rights for a year and fined 500,000 yuan.

The gang bought a kidney for 20,000 yuan and sold it to a patient with kidney disease for 230,000 to 270,000 yuan.

The surgeon and other medical workers in the gang used to work at hospitals in Guangzhou and Foshan in Guangdong province.

The defendants are considering whether to appeal to the verdicts.

Three people who sold their kidneys have lodged claims for compensation from the gang.
