LONDON - Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Monday that a sound development of China-UK ties benefits not only the two countries but peace and development of the whole world.
Speaking at a gathering with eminent British figures who have contributed a great deal to the China-UK friendship, Wen said that China-UK ties have gone through numerous ups and downs and now face both opportunities and challenges.
Calling those present "old friends of China" and "the backbone of the China-UK friendship," the premier said China-UK relationship should move forward. He also expressed the hope that they will continue contributing to the mutual understanding and bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
While recalling their interaction with China, the British participants said the two countries should enhance communication and cooperation as they have many common interests and goals.
They also thanked Wen for his encouragement, and promised to make more contributions to the healthy development of China-UK ties.
Wen arrived in Britain on Saturday evening for a three-day visit. Britain is the second leg of his ongoing three-nation Europe tour after Hungary and before Germany.
