Safety check of fireworks factory stepped up

BEIJING - China's work safety watchdog Friday urged local authorities to carry out strict safety checks at firework factories ahead of the Spring Festival.

Sun Huashan, deputy director of the State Administration of Work Safety, said fires and chemical explosions happen frequently in winter.

Fireworks are used in China to celebrate the Spring Festival, which falls on February 3 this year.

Some 94 work safety accidents happened in China in the first 19 days of January, up 14.6 percent year on year. In the latest event, at least 10 people were killed and 21 others injured in a fireworks plant explosion in central China's Henan Province.

Sun urged local authorities to earnestly carry out safety checks, to ensure a happy and peaceful Spring Festival.
