Olympics builds societyBy ()
Updated: 2007-03-30 13:34 Holding the Olympic Games should be a process of societal advancement, says an editorial in Beijing News. An excerpt follows: It was 500 days before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games on Monday. The preparation organizations have all been in final spurt status for the games. Activities around the theme of the Olympics are getting animated. But now we should think thoroughly about the purpose of the Olympic Games. The Olympics is the biggest ever international event held by China, a great opportunity for the country to upgrade its national image and build a modern metropolis. For China, it is not only a window to introduce traditional culture and modern spirit but also a stage to learn modernization and international rules. Thus the significance of the Olympic Games does not only exist during the two weeks that the Olympic Flame is burning. Beijing has focused on building a fine living environment. Public transport has developed at an unprecedented speed. Several subway routes are under construction and will be put into use before the Olympics. Beijing began to emphasize "blue sky days" and environmental protection became an important index for urban construction. People-friendly and harmonious themes were introduced. And low-price tickets will enable more ordinary people to watch the games. More than that, the public can expect a brand new city management concept and development mode. A criterion to assess the Olympics is to let the public feel the progress achieved by the city and the country. There should be economic progress, a more open vision and a complete mechanism to guarantee people's rights. (For more biz stories, please visit Industry Updates)
