Under the baton of conductor Ouyang Wangjian, Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra staged a concert at China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, on Dec 16.

Featuring Yang Guang, associate professor of bassoon at Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, as the soloist, the concert presented a music piece, titled Ji Cang Hai ("across the vast sea"), which was funded by Zhejiang Cultural and Arts Development Fund.

Composed by Wu Na, the resident composer of the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra, the music piece draws inspiration from the fishermen's work chants in Zhoushan, Zhejiang. Performed by bassoon and orchestra, the piece features rugged yet beautiful melodies vividly portraying the scenes of fishermen at work. Combining harmonious and dissonant sounds, the piece expresses the fishermen's struggles, fears, and resilience as they battle the sea far from home.

Besides Ji Cang Hai, the concert also featured several other symphonic works, such as a Chinese music piece titled Colorful Zhejiang by composers including Zhou Xianglin, Weng Chigeng, and Guo Ming. Colorful Zhejiang uses music as its language to depict the scenic landscapes, cultural heritage, and dynamic development in Zhejiang.
