Iran, Pakistan agree to improve border security

Iran emphasized enhancing coordination with Pakistan to bolster border security and curb cross-border terrorism, with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi affirming Iran’s commitment to prevent terrorists from targeting Pakistan.

Araghchi’s visit to Islamabad centered on regional security issues, including the ongoing Israeli aggression in Palestine and Lebanon, and recent threats against Iran.

Speaking at an embassy reception, he acknowledged “gaps” in Iran-Pakistan border security coordination but noted a shared “will and good determination” to address them. “Terrorism against Pakistan is a threat against us,” Araghchi affirmed, following meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy PM Ishaq Dar, and army chief Gen Asim Munir. He conveyed to Gen Munir Iran’s support in combatting terrorism, emphasizing the solidarity between the two countries.

The Iran-Pakistan border has been a challenging security area due to its rugged, porous landscape, which has become a transit point for drug trafficking, smuggling, and armed groups causing cross-border violence. Araghchi stressed the need for a structured mechanism to enable liaison officers to work effectively. He also pointed out a link between Israeli actions and recent terrorist threats, noting the timing of attacks and Israeli strikes.

During a media briefing, Deputy PM Ishaq Dar highlighted a mutual pledge to improve border management and address shared security concerns. “We committed to intensifying collaboration on border management and combating terrorism and extremism,” Dar stated. Araghchi reiterated that security challenges faced by Iran and Pakistan are “externally fueled” and agreed to sustain counter-terrorism efforts through military, security, and political channels.

Arab League and OIC Joint Summit

Araghchi also discussed the upcoming joint summit of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, set for November 11 in Riyadh, expressing hope for decisive action against Israeli aggression in Palestine and Lebanon. He warned that unchecked Israeli actions could further destabilize the West Bank, Syria, and other regions.
