As the capital of Dehong Dai and Jingpo autonomous prefecture in Yunnan province, Mangshi city was known historically as the “Elephant Riding Kingdom of Dian and Yue” and was a fortress on the ancient Southern Silk Road.

The city is a key node in China's relationship building with South and Southeast Asia and is an important gateway to the Indian Ocean. With its unique geographical location, excellent environment, beautiful natural scenery, rich ethnic culture and folk customs, Mangshi is an emerging tourist destination which combines scenic mountain and water views, ethnic culture, Dehong cuisine and a slow-paced border life.

The Peacock Lake Tourist Resort is located in the southeastern suburbs of Mangshi, covering an area of about 13.9 square kilometers. It is 7.5 kilomeeters, or a 15-minute drive, from Mangshi International Airport. Centered around Peacock Lake, the resort extends southeast to the outer area of the Huafeng Peacock Lake Resort Hotel group, including the lake and its surrounding trails. To the west, it reaches the ridge of Leiyarang Mountain, encompassing Menghuan Golden Pagoda, Menghuan Silver Pagoda, the Monument of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) in western Yunnan province, and Mengbanaxi Exotic Garden. To the north, it extends to the north bank of the Banguo River, including the Dai ancient town, Manghuang ethnic village and Jinhu Bay Water Park.

Previously Mangjiu Reservoir, the area became Peacock Lake in 1958. It takes its name from the fact that, historically, the area was a habitat for green peacocks, and the lake's shape resembles a peacock with its tail fanned out.

In 2005, the lake was rated as a national water conservancy scenic area while, in July 2020, it was designated a provincial-level tourist resort.
