For more than half a century, Tianjin and Kobe have cultivated a profound friendship, strengthened by the dedication of individuals who serve as vital links between these two cities.

Their stories reflect the depth of cultural exchange, resilience, and mutual support that define the Tianjin-Kobe relationship.

Kenji Takahashi, former chief representative of Kobe in China who worked in Tianjin for more than three years, is an excellent example of these efforts.

Takahashi's connection to China began in his college years, when he studied Chinese history and developed a deep affection for the country. "Even before I came to China, I had heard that it was leading the world in digital payments, bicycle-sharing systems, and other cutting-edge technologies," he said.

As a representative of Kobe in Tianjin, Takahashi's major responsibility was to promote mutual understanding between the two cities and their people. "It's a coincidence that my name contains the Chinese character for 'bridge', and my job was to bridge the two sides," he said.

Navigating the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in a foreign land, Takahashi bore witness to the enduring bond between Tianjin and Kobe. Arriving in Tianjin amid the height of the pandemic in August 2020, he immediately delved into efforts to coordinate between the two cities to combat the virus.

Takahashi recalled that Tianjin donated 200,000 face masks to Kobe and later, Kobe sent the much-needed medical equipment to Tianjin. This mutual support finally brought both cities out of the shadow of the health crisis.

At that time, he took part in receiving the anti-pandemic supplies donated by Tianjin to Kobe.

"When I saw those precious medical resources delivered to hospitals and that people finally got cured, I was so moved and felt the friendship between Tianjin and Kobe has a strong power that can lead us get through all the difficulties," he said.
