China to impose export controls on strategic metal antimony
China will impose export controls on antimony and related products, with the measure taking effect on Sept 15, the Ministry of Commerce announced in an online notice on Thursday.
Antimony is a non-renewable strategic mineral resource. It is indispensable in applications such as military, aerospace, printing and flame retardancy, making it difficult to replace. It is listed as a critical mineral in short supply both domestically and internationally.
In accordance with the relevant laws, the decision was made to safeguard national security and interests, and fulfill international obligations, said the notice jointly released by the ministry and the General Administration of Customs.
After Sept 14, antimony and related products, including metal antimony, antimony hydride, antimony ore and raw materials, as well as related technologies and equipment, cannot be exported without government review and approval, said the notice.
The ministry said it will review the export application documents upon receipt or conduct a joint review with relevant departments, and make a decision to grant or deny the permit within the legally prescribed time limit.
