His artistic journey began at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, Germany, where he honed his craft before immersing himself in the vibrant punk scene of 1970s Berlin. This era of rebellious creativity left an indelible mark on Oehlen, shaping his distinctive style and approach to art.
Embracing the spirit of the "Wild New" movement in the 1980s, Oehlen challenged the conventions of traditional painting, aligning himself with a group of avant-garde artists from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. His work, characterized by a bold Neo-Expressionist aesthetic, defied norms and pushed boundaries, earning him acclaim and recognition on the global art stage.
