Su Caixia, 95, is happy doing needlework. The temperature in the room is warm, and family members are preparing a meal.
Su lives in Xiji county, in northwest China's Ningxia Hui autonomous region, in Mengji village, where she was born and grew up. It was the last village in Xiji county to rise out of poverty last year.
"I'm very happy every day, and have meat to eat every day," she said as she ate oranges.
Su lives with her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Meng Yanzhou, the son, is 60 years old now. For many years, he made a living by driving a motorized tricycle to collect and sell agricultural products from farmers. The money he made supported schooling for three of his children.
In 2014, Meng got a loan of 50,000 yuan ($7,800) from the local government to start a delivery company with his daughter — the only such company in Mengji. At the beginning, fewer than a dozen packages were delivered daily, but now the number of packages can reach 800 per day.
Last year, Meng paid off the loan. Now the business is run by his daughter.
"We can earn about 200,000 yuan ($30,000) a year. My main task now is to take care of my mother," Meng said.
Under local policies Su gets a monthly subsidy of 600 yuan. Last year, her family was named the Most Beautiful Family in Xiji county.
